In June I took went on my first holiday to Italy, its somewhere I have always wanted to go. Pizza and Gelato was going to be eaten the entire time I was there and it did not disappoint. Italy is one of the most
beautiful places I have ever seen. If you ever get a chance to go, DO IT.
I stayed in Sorrento which is a costal town in southwestern Italy. It faces the Bay of Naples and the famous volcano, Mount Vesuvius. Which destroyed Pompeii in AD 79 and most recently erupted in 1944. If you go to Sorrento you need to explore the small alley ways, where you will find hundreds of small antique shops, restaurants. Try to avoid the main strips where everything is commercialised, if you want to get a real feel for Italy, go to the small shops full of wooden crosses and the small family run restaurants.
The food in Italy is out of this world. Good old Dominos will never be the same again after tasting the delightful fresh pizza's that you can get practically everywhere. With Gelato shops on every corner you are never far from pistachio, vanilla, hazelnut or practically any ice cream flavour you could imagine. As you can imagine, with Sorrento being a costal town there is a lot of fish and seafood. I personally don't eat either but the people I went with did and they said it was exceptional, most restaurants specified wether fish was fresh or frozen which is honesty that makes the entire dining experience better. Please note: I have an extremely bad nut allergy and upon arrival in Sorrento found out that near to everything is fried in peanut oil. Every restaurant I went to was very accommodating and helpful in helping me pick suitable food. Some restaurants even had allergen information in the menu which was very useful. It just mean't I was restricted in what food I could eat, so beware!
Top 5 places to eat in Sorrento
Restaurant Bagni Delfino- The most beautiful restaurant I think I will ever eat in. This restaurant is set on a jetty which extends into the sea. The water gushes underneath you in the most spectacular way. Watching the sunset over Mount Vesuvius is a memory I will cherish forever. Not only were the views spectacular this fish restaurant offers the tastiest dishes I had in Sorrento. We stupidly walked to the restaurant from the main town of Sorrento which took about 25 minutes down hill in the rain, but my god it was worth it! A must when in Sorrento, but perhaps get a taxi there as it is so remote. The picture on the left is the view from my table, taken sitting in my seat, on my mobile phone. The picture speaks for itself, breathtaking.
Ristorante O' Murzill'- This is a tiny restaurant down a small, tight alley way in Sorrento. It was quiet, quaint and the staff were exceptional. Friendly and apologetic, the restaurant was tight and they were busy which the 2 waitresses apologised for profusely. The best pasta I ever ate was in this restaurant. It was clearly all fresh and home cooked. The waits for this restaurant are often long due to how small it is. We booked a table but still has to wait for 20 minutes after our booking time to be sat down, don't let this effect your decision to eat there. It is worth the wait!
Ristorante Pizzeria Tasso- Most definitely the best Pizza I have ever eaten. Again the staff were fantastic in this restaurant and so accommodating to my allergies. The decor was beautiful and it was such a calm and inviting environment. If you are looking for good pizza restaurants in Sorrento, I can not recommend this enough.
Le Grazie- Again, a small restaurant off the beaten track in Sorrento, to be honest we went here because one night the wait for Ristorante O'Murzill' was too long. However, we had a table outside, with lemon trees above us and warm lighting. It was everything I imagined Italy to be, and I was so glad we went to this restaurant. Again the food was exceptional, I had pasta, but obviously you look at other food being delivered to tables and the meat dishes in this restaurant looked out of this world!
Ristorante L'Abate- This restaurant is a very short walk from the main square in Sorrento, it was a very tourist restaurant which got busy very quickly, staff were rushed off their feet and unfortunately were not as friendly as other places we ate. We went in here mainly because I wanted to try the Arancini, which is an Italian food of fried risotto, I've tried it in the UK but I wanted to try it authentically in Italy. Unfortunately, the Arancini was fried in peanut oil so I couldn't eat it, I knew this thanks to the restaurants helpful allergen information in the menu. However, the food that I did eat here was very reasonably priced and tasty. For a quick dinner, I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
I will do another post soon on day trips to Amalfi, Pompeii and Capri.
Gem xoxo
